Olivet Community Schools

District Commitment Statement

The goal of the Curriculum Department at Olivet Community Schools is to provide for a K-12 curriculum that clearly states the content to be covered in specific courses and grade levels, as wells as, providing sufficient time for teachers to teach this content so all students are able to learn. In order to work towards this goal, a 24 member Curriculum Council has been created.  This Council consists of 18 K-12 teachers, who act as Curriculum Coordinators and Department heads for their content area, and 6 district administrators. The Council meets five times per school year and focuses on the following:

  • Alignment of the K-12 curriculum to state standards and benchmarks
  • Providing  consistency of instruction at each grade level
  • Providing vertical alignment for consistent  delivery of instruction K-12
  • Development of pacing guides to ensure adequate time to teach the curriculum
  • Development of Quarterly Assessments to check for student learning

In addition to the Curriculum Council, there has been a district commitment to the development of Professional Learning Communities. In these communities teachers are committed to working collaboratively and to the sharing of ideas. Teachers discuss both formative and summative assessments which check for student learning. The end result of this collaborative work is the use of highly effective teaching strategies which lead to increased student learning.

Instructional Coaches assist Classroom Teachers

An instructional coach works as a colleague with classroom teachers to support student learning.  The coach focuses on individual and group professional development that will expand and refine the understanding about researched-based effective instruction.  In order to meet this purpose, the coach provides personalized support that is based on the goals and identified needs of individual teachers.
