From the Superintendent...

Welcome Back to the 2020-2021 school year! It is hard to believe that the summer is over and we are getting ready to start another exciting year. Despite all of the challenges and uncertainties around COVID-19, we are planning for a fantastic year at Olivet Community Schools.

It is my great honor to be here in Olivet as your new superintendent. I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and provide some background information. This is my 28th year in education. I have been a middle school/high school teacher, served in a number of central office positions including seven years as a superintendent, and have worked at the ISD level as well. My wife and I have two children (13 year old daughter and 17 year old son) and we are very excited to be joining the community.

As we approach this new school year, I am reminded of my first year in teaching. I had a great deal of excitement but also some nervousness. This year has been no different as we have been working the last few weeks since my arrival on our COVID-19 plans including the Preparedness and Response Plan as well as our Comprehensive Plan with Return to Learn guidelines and options. Our goal throughout this planning process has been to ensure the safety of students, staff, and community while continuing to provide the high quality education that Olivet Community Schools is known for.

There is a great deal of information provided in the plans. In order to help clarify the key points and provide an outline, we have created a two-page Return to Learn summary document. The Return to Learn document outlines parent options, explains each option, and provides links to all of the plans, letters and resources that we have been working on. The Return to Learn guide can be accessed on the district homepage at www.olivetschools.org.

There is no doubt this will be a very challenging year given the continued global pandemic. However, we are committed to making this the best year yet. The outstanding students and staff at Olivet Community Schools will carry on the tradition of Academic Excellence, Athletic Distinction & Artistic Greatness.

Have a great year and Go Eagles!

John W. Mertz

Superintendent
